Hair

Today was Crazy Hair Day at school.

Below, you can see the crazy hair creations that my kids left the house wearing.

Greg designed and styled Elizabeth’s (many skinny ponytails and bun type things with two big flowers stuck on the top).

I did Alexandra’s (one ponytail on the top of her head, which I then made 3 braids out of, and clipped some clips on). Not very creative, but I knew she’d pull it all out about 15 minutes after I dropped her off so I didn’t spend too much time on it.

And…..we didn’t have any power this morning. Yay! So my pictures are not very good absolutely horrible. My apologies. I didn’t have time to change my lens and make everyone pose, plus despite what the pictures say it was really dark, so this is what I ended up with. I promise, I’ll do better next time!

Now, on to more important things: MY hair!

I hate my hair.

It didn’t used to be so bad – when I was young (very young, as in before puberty), it was long, light brown and nice and straight.

Then, I turned into a tween (I know we weren’t called tweens back then, but I liked the thought of using that word so I did) and my hair went C.R.A.Z.Y.

It got a lot darker and started to get really wavy. And not only did it get wavy, but it got frizzy. Really, really, really frizzy.

To make a very long, ugly and torturous story short, I have spent the last 25 or so years trying to make my hair do what I wanted it to do, rather than let it do what it wanted to do. Well, there was a time period in the early 90’s that I just said “whatever” and let it just be, but then someone asked me “are you ever going to do your hair again?” and I was low self esteemed into blow drying it straight and putting massive amounts of product into it again.

My latest phase, if you will, has been to use hair products without any yucky, cancer causing, skin irritating chemicals in them. I’ve been doing this for about….oh…..2 years now, and for the most part, things have been alright. I have noticed that my ends split really easily and quickly (which doesn’t do anything for the ever present frizz), but besides that, it still grows really quickly and I get the occasional compliment on it.

But then, last night, something happened.

I took Alexandra to get our hair cut, and without intending to, we ended up at a real hair salon. Remember? I told you about it here.

Well, the stylist washed and conditioned my hair with the yummiest smelling stuff, and then put some de-frizzing-more-shiny stuff in it and by the time she was done with me, my hair looked really good! Ask Greg – he’ll tell you that I spent a large amount of time brushing it, swinging my head around and saying “My hair looks really good!” last night.

Now, all day, I’ve been contemplating the return of chemical-laden hair products into my life. I mean, I’m old, and I’ve been exposed to that stuff for more years than I care to count, so it’s probably too late for me anyway, right? Plus, the bad stuff is a lot cheaper than the good stuff.

My plan right now is to continue on with the good stuff for the girls, since they’re young and have many years ahead of them and use the bad stuff on me again. As a matter of fact, I do believe that I have some left over Suave smoothing shampoo and conditioner in the closet that I never got around to throwing out when I switched to Burt’s Bees. I might just have to pull it out!

Lastly:  I have finally discovered the show "Glee".  I realize I am probably the last person on the planet to watch it, and it's probably done for the summer in a week or so, but all I can say is:  What an awesome show!  I mean, who wouldn't love a show that makes teenagers sing the song "Jessie's Girl"?

And if you don't - then yes.  There IS something wrong with you.

Where's the pictures of your hair!!!!????? How can you tell us all about getting your hair done and how great it looks and then not show us? Pshaw.

Subbing in PE wasn't bad. The main issue was that I was in a non air conditioned gym...in TX...in May. It was so stinkin' hot and then I sat outside for 1.5 hours for Nolan's swim lessons. I was beat when it was all said and done. But next year when this school moves to a brand spankin' new school with an air conditioned gym I'll all over that job!
